We have to stop assigning unfair and inaccurate overgeralizations to people who do not share our views. Calling the supporters of Mr Trump uneducated is not only inaccurate, it’s a cruel form of elitism. People who share differing political opinions are just like you and me. And we’re going to have to work together to achieve any of the real changes that matter.
We have to stop the violence. When we protest violently, we’re hurting both others and our cause. MLK, Gandhi and all the peaceful protests since have shown you can deliver a message AND effect change without violence. Violence begets violence.
More of this sentiment please….
“For a bowl of water give a goodly meal;
For a kindly greeting bow thou down with zeal;
For a simple penny pay thou back with gold;
If thy life be rescued, life do not withhold.
Thus the words and actions of the wise regard;
Every little service tenfold they reward.
But the truly noble know all men as one,
And return with gladness good for evil done.”
― Mahatma Gandhi, The Story of My Experiments With Truth
What do we have to do?
We have to teach people why this election was different and why it is unacceptable to elect someone like Mr Trump (a racist, a bully, an attacker of women, a deceiver and proven liar and on and on) ever again in the future.
We have to work WITH Mr Trump in the meantime to help encourage the most favorable outcome possible for his time in office.
We have to learn and acknowledge what WE have ALL contributed to help arrive at this place. It didnt start with just this election.
We have to remove the barriers of ‘us’ vs ‘them’. We all know people we love, friends and family on ‘the other side.’ Stop feeling better than others and realize they probably have legitimate points to make. Listen.
We have to stop relying on our government to fix things. These problems are ours the people and WE are the answer to fixing them. Own them.
We have to stop the violence.
The hatred. The fear. The threats.
We have to learn to be able to Disagree, Communicate AND Compromise in how we work, live and govern together. Support your fellow brothers and sisters.
We have to learn how to coexist in and with our world. We don’t actually have an option here.
This will be an evolving list.
While Mr Trump has done many things worthy of protest during his campaign, protesting after the election before he takes any action at all, especially since he made the point of wanting to govern all, i feel is ….unwise.
As the President and Secretary Clinton said yesterday, he is our president-elect and deserves our support.
Protests now, I worry, only add a concrete to the crevasses of divide that are growing between the people of this country.
